Mulled Wine For Holiday Cheer.

November 16, 2016

With the smell of spicy goodness simmering over the stove, the European tradition of mulled wine & cider ushers in the holidays with the warm, reassuring tastes of  fruit, spice & sweetness in one amazing drink. Simple to prepare and a pleasure to consume, mulled drinks are the perfect antidote to a chilly evening and a great tribute to  friends and family.

Here are two easy to follow recipes that will have your home smelling like a grand Victorian parlor right out of Dickens.

Mulled Wine Recipe

  • One bottle (750 mL) of inexpensive red wine
  • ¼ cup of brandy (optional)
  • ¼ cup of honey or sugar (optional)
  • (2) teaspoons of mulling spices
  • (1) sliced orange (optional)

Pour wine into a large saucepan or slow cooker. Turn on low heat. Add brandy. After 5 minutes, add honey or sugar (adjust amount for sweetness) & submerge culinary bag with 2 tablespoons of mulling spice mix. Let heat for 15-20 minutes, just under boiling. Stir occasionally. Remove culinary bag & pour into mugs. Add a thin slice of orange to each serving.

Mulled Cider Recipe

  • (1) gallon of fresh cider
  • (1) sliced lemon
  • (4) tablespoons of mulling spice mix

Using a six-quart saucepan, add cider, sliced lemon & culinary bag with (4) tablespoons of mulling spice mix. Heat on high until boiling. Reduce heat to low, cover pan and let simmer for 30-45 minutes. Remove lemon slices & culinary bag before serving.
